Workshop proposal for the World Social Forum 2002
The following is a mixed form of workshop and artistic project – a proposal for all future World Social Forums.
RELAX AND MULTILOGUE
A meeting point for interdisciplinary projects; a space of silence and extended language.
The World Social Forum’s dimensions are exploding – concerning the growing number of participants and thematic issues as well as functioning communication structures. +
The World Social Forum needs a symbol and a point of concentration, a non-verbal field of experimentation, a relaxing zone.
Space of the round table – round field – circle of experimentation – round stage – all the room is stage - palaver.... This space has always been a symbol for political and cultural approximation, of non-violent conflict-solution as well as partying. It is a symbolical space for equality, for instance also between culture and the arts on the one hand and politics and economy on the other hand.
The space of extended dialogue from monologue via dialogue to multilogue: This means a stronger integration of the languages of cultures and the arts (body language, music, performance, symbols etc.) and a conscious reduction of the spoken word. We propose a space of encounter and reduced talking as a counter-balance to the incessant talking of the World Social Forum.
The circle of experimentation / the round stage is also an interdisciplinary and interethnic space: The different cultures in the centre represent the energetic fields which are the basis of any interdisciplinary and interethnic work. Here will also be the daily meeting point for a workshop of interdisciplinary cultural projects working towards a balanced distribution of resources all over the world.
„The space of the sleeping carousel“: during consciously composed sleeping phases representatives of different social fields as well as cultures sleep together in this circle, on this round table. Sleep might help to suspend the classical fragmentations of the whole into science, economy, social affairs, education, environment, grassroot politics and arts.
Ideally the space will be open 24 hours on all days of the WSF, each day being structured into three phases:
1. workshop & meeting point for interdisciplinary projects .
2. multilogue & recreation, f.e. music, dance, singing, storytelling etc.
3. relax & sleep.
Depending on the development of the project we imagine that artists and cultural workers from different cultural backgrounds create phases of non-verbal dialogue which can happen during limited improvisations of music, dance, performance, games or non-verbal parties.
Therefore we would like interested groups/individuals who will be participating in the WSF to get in touch with us during the following months – lets start the creative dialogue right now!
Practical information:
RELAX AND MULTILOGUE should be open during the whole World Social Forum, 24 hours a day/night

Technical needs:
a space (30m x 30m, min 15x15m) in the centre of the main discussion area of the WSF
good acoustics, minimum noise from outside
wooden floor or gym mats
sleeping possibilities (matresses) for 50 people
sitting possibilities (chairs, sofas, armchairs etc) for 100 people
gong for signals
black double curtains for the entrance doors
ajustable lighting - no neon lights!
water and tea supply, cooking facility and refrigerators
sanitary facilities
